Helping Primary Care Physicians Lower Pharmaceutical Expenses: An Academic Medical Center’s Experience

چکیده

• Objective: To address steadily rising pharmaceutical expenses under global capitation, our physicianhospital organization (PHO) implemented a drug substitution program that supports primary care physicians (PCPs) in making prescription changes. • Program description: PCPs review pharmaceutical claims data, approve standard changes to more cost-effective alternative medications with lower patient copayments, and sign computer-generated prescriptions and letters to patients. The program was designed to enhance the effectiveness of the insurers’ simultaneous increase in copayment for expensive brand medications.
